Abstract

Magi and The Star of Bethlehem

Over the centuries, artists have portrayed the visit of the magi in various ways, sometimes with and sometimes without including the star of Bethlehem.We will explore several of these illustrations, and examine issues relating to portraying a biblical story in modern cultural institutions.

Biographical Details

Marvin Bolt, PhD, is the Adler's vice president for collections and manages the resources of Adler's Webster Institute for the History of Astronomy. He has also authored and co-authored books and catalogs on the Adler's collection of astronomical artifacts and articles for national and international professional journals. His research on the history of the telescope is supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Science Foundation (NSF).
